Why Is My White Gold Starting to Look Yellow?

If your white gold ring is starting to look a little yellow, don't worry. It doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong with your jewelry. In fact, it's something we see all the time.

White gold isn't naturally bright white. Gold has a warm yellow color, so to create white gold, it is mixed with other metals that give it a lighter appearance. Most white gold jewelry is then finished with a thin layer of rhodium, which gives it that bright, crisp white finish you see when it's new.

Over time, that rhodium finish naturally begins to wear away. How quickly that happens depends on the piece, how often you wear it, and even where the jewelry comes in contact with your skin. Rings tend to show it sooner because they're worn on your hands every day.

As the rhodium wears, you may begin to notice a slightly warmer or yellow tone showing through. That's simply the natural color of the white gold underneath becoming more visible.

The good news is that it can usually be refreshed. We can clean and inspect your jewelry and, when needed, reapply the rhodium finish to bring back that bright white appearance.

With the holidays coming up, October is a great time to take a look at the pieces you wear most. If your white gold isn't looking quite as white as it used to, bring it into Nespoli's. We can take a look and let you know what it needs.
