Lab & Natural Diamonds
How are they different?
How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made
Lab grown diamonds, also called lab created, man made, or cultured diamonds, are produced using advanced technology that replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds form in the Earth. These diamonds are created in a controlled laboratory environment using one of two methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Both processes involve pure carbon crystallizing into the diamond structure under intense heat and pressure, just like in nature.
Because lab grown diamonds are made of the same carbon atoms and crystal structure as natural diamonds, they are physically, chemically, and optically identical. The only difference is how they are formed. Lab grown diamonds are cut, polished, and graded just like mined diamonds, and they come with certification from reputable gemological labs that identifies them as lab created.
How Natural Grown Diamonds Are Formed
Natural diamonds form deep within the Earth's mantle, roughly 90 to 125 miles below the surface, where carbon is subjected to extreme heat and pressure over long periods of time. Some diamonds may form quickly over the course of weeks or months due to rapid geological changes, while others take millions or even billions of years to develop.
These diamonds are carried to the surface through volcanic activity, where they can eventually be mined and turned into gemstones.
Lab Grown vs. Natural: What is the Difference?
To the naked eye, there is no visible difference between a lab grown diamond and a natural one. Both have the same sparkle, brilliance, and durability. Even under magnification, gemologists need specialized tools to distinguish one from the other.
The main difference lies in their origin
Natural diamonds are formed deep in the Earth and extracted through mining
Lab diamonds are created using modern technology in a controlled setting
Both are real diamonds and can be certified, graded, and set in fine jewelry.
